As a caregiver I have always tried to stay vigilant about my self-care. I am very aware that without gas in my tank I am unable to be there for others. As a result, I strive to be the best version of myself so that I can show up with energy, compassion, and understanding. I am not perfect at it but my intention to be kind to myself helps me stay focused on doing so a fair amount of the time.

Think about your self-care in terms of bookends. Start your day with you and end the day with you. Maybe you like to exercise in the mornings or meditate. Perhaps you enjoy journaling in the solitude of the early morning hours when the rest of the world is still sleeping. I routinely prescribe ending each day with gratitude whether that is a journal or simply a pause before crawling into bed.

Starting and ending the day with you is a beautiful way to stay intentional about self-care and prove to yourself over and over again that your health and wellbeing are a priority. Similarly, ending the day with you is a great way to wrap up the day in a meaningful way and is in line with the practice of self-love.
