I know as human beings we are instinctually driven to avoid pain. We learn not to stick our hands in the fire because we can get burned. This instinct makes sense from a survival perspective, but when it comes to healing through trauma (and the psychological pain that comes with it) we have to turn off the urge to run.
When it comes to trauma impact the only way through it is through it. This is because allowing ourselves to process out the injury is the only way to actually heal it. This is of course the opposite of what trauma does to us.
Through our painful experiences no one asked us what we wanted. Acknowledging our experience (and feelings) as valid is the opposite of what happened to us. Trauma can only be healed through this type of corrective experience.
Hold steady through the heat of this particular fire. Turn away when you need to but don’t turn away completely. What happened matters and processing it out will actually allow you to heal. For this you have to be willing to walk straight into the fire.
Fires eventually go out and make new growth possible. You will survive this too.
